This time back has been created as a pilot for the learning community course: Is Happy a Hoax? This is a fully integrated, co-taught course in which students will learn the content of Introduction to Psychology and Composition 1 while focusing on the theme of happiness. Specifically, what should we do to be happy?
Although the idea of self care has become very popular on social media as a way to increase happiness, the best research shows us that finding purpose and creating meaningful relationships is what truly makes us happy. This is where time banking comes into play. We will track students' participation as well as their reactions to the time banking experience. If time banking is successful in promoting well-being, this will become a regular part of our course and may even grown throughout our college.
I am the founder of EAT Local CSRA, whose mission is to help people make and enjoy eating locally grown, organic food. Another big part of my life here in Augusta is working with Child Enrichment both as a CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocate for Abused and Neglected Children) and with the Heroes Club, a part of Child Enrichment. I have two children ages 18 and 20 and our family moved from Maryland 11 years ago. Finally, I was born in Brooklyn, went to a math/science magnet high school, got my undergraduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, and then my PhD in Bioengineering specializing in hip and knee implant materials. When my kids were young, I trained to become a mediator and worked part-time in a community mediation center.
